Cerenkov Excitation of WhistlerHelicon Waves by Ionospheric HF Heating

چکیده
A novel scheme for exciting VLF waves and injecting them in the magnetosphere is presented. The scheme is based on Cerenkov excitation of whistler and helicon waves in an altitude range of 80-95 kin. Contrary to the traditional Cerenkov excitation which relies on a charge moving at speeds ex•g the local phase velocity of the wave, the present scheme relies on currents moving transversely to its flow direction. The moving current source is created by changing the spatial location of the energy deposition of an ionospheric heater in phase with the wave motion. Representative estimates of the VLF power injected in the magnetosphere are presented. tion (3) in time and the transverse spatial direction, and writE,.,t E• :3⁄4 iE•,, J,.,t J• q: iJ•y (4)

Modulation of auroral electrojet currents using dual modulated HF beams with ELF phase offset, a potential Dregion ionospheric diagnostic
[1] Experiments at the ionospheric heating facility of the High Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) are performed employing dual HF beams amplitude modulated at ELF/VLF with a phase offset between the two modulation waveforms. The amplitude of the observed ELF/VLF waves is strongly dependent on the imposed ELF/VLF phase offset, the modulation waveform, and the orientation of the H...
متن کاملComputer simulations for direct conversion of the HF electromagnetic wave into the upper hybrid wave in ionospheric heating experiments
Excitation of upper hybrid waves associated with the ionospheric heating experiments is assumed to be essential in explaining some of the features of stimulated electromagnetic emissions (SEE). A direct conversion process is proposed as an excitation mechanism of the upper hybrid waves where the energy of an obliquely propagating electromagnetic pump wave is converted into the electrostatic upp...
متن کاملWhistler Wave Interactions with Space Plasmas during HF Heating of the Ionosphere at Arecibo
We demonstrate that signals at 28.5 kHz emitted from the Naval (NAU) transmitter in Puerto Rico e ectively couple into ionospheric ducts, induced/enhanced by the Arecibo HF heater, and propagate into the conjugate hemisphere as ducted whistlers. Also presented are suspected radar detections of whistler-triggered electron precipitation events. NAU-generated whistlers have intensities su cient to...
متن کاملModel for artificial ionospheric duct formation due to HF heating
[1] Strong electron heating by the injection of highly powerfu l HF waves can lead to the format ion of ionospheric plasma density perturbations that stretch along the magnetic field lines. Those density perturbations can serve as ducts for guiding natural and artificial ELF/VLF waves. This paper presents a theoretical model of duct formation due to HF heating of the ionosphere. The model is ba...
متن کاملIonospheric electron heating, optical emissions, and striations induced by powerful HF radio waves at high latitudes: Aspect angle dependence
[1] In recent years, large electron temperature increases of 300% (3000 K above background) caused by powerful HF-radio wave injection have been observed during nighttime using the EISCAT incoherent scatter radar near Tromsø in northern Norway. In a case study we examine the spatial structure of the modified region. The electron heating is accompanied by ion heating of about 100 degrees and mag...
